From the President

March 25, 2009

To all Members
PSSN

Dear Members,

I would like to inform everyone that the convention scheduled this April 28-May 1, 2009 will be moved to November 12-15, 2009. I have consulted with the members of the board and former presidents and majority is in conformity with the rescheduling. I have communicated also with our plenary speakers that there will be a rescheduling of the conference since most of them will be out of the country this summer. I have reached this decision when in the last seminar conducted here at the university; many participants said they will not be able to attend this summer conference since many will be on vacation and majority will also be attending other conferences scheduled regularly during the summer break. Considering the limitations of funds for travel and attendance to conferences, they will not be able to attend our conference. Many teachers and students are also on vacation so it will be very difficult not only logistically but paper presentations will be less. At present I have received only 15 papers for presentation but I am assured that if it will be held this November, it will be a success. Funds from our organization are also limited so I have to source out from donors and possible sponsors to ensure successful operations for the convention. Considering the stature of our invited speakers, I really need enough support financially. Our invited speakers are as follows:

1. Dr. Ben Malayang, President, Silliman University – Keynote speaker
2. Sen. Juan Miguel Zubirri, Senator – Role of lawmakers in the protection and conservation of the environment
3. Sen. Loren Legarda, Luntiang Pilipinas, Senate of the Philippines – Greening of the Philippines: Restoration of nature destruction (CONFIRMED)
4. Howie Severino, Host Sine Totoo, GMA7 – Role of media in the protection of the environment
5. Dr. Ferdz Recio, Host, Born to be Wild –Environmental education: the Born to be wild experience
6. Kim Atienza, Host, Matanglawin – environmental education through media (CONFIRMED)
7. Chin-Chin Guttierrez, Actress and Environmentalist – Advocacy in the protection of environment
8. Prof. Christian Aguado, Kalimulan, Internationally known Dance Company – Nature as expressed in dance (CONFIRMED)
9. Dr. Naomi Tangonan, University Professor, USM – Role of teaching and research in the protection and conservation of nature (CONFIRMED)
10. Dr. Perry Ong, Director, IB, UP Diliman- "Winning the War in Conserving Biodiversity: Transforming Biologists into Biopoliticians" (CONFIRMED)
11. Gina Lopez – Bantay Kalikasan – Nature’s right to water in light of a water crisis (CONFIRMED)
12. Dr. Juan Carlos Gonzales – Assistant Professor, UPLB – Wildlife in the Philippines in Crisis: Is there any hope ? (CONFIRMED)
13. Dr. Domingo Madulid – National Museum

I apologize for the inconvenience I may have caused everyone for the changes. I am very much interested that the convention will be a successful one but I will be honest I will not be able to do it this summer break.

I thank you in advance for your support as we look forward to a successful holding of the 9th National Convention this November.

Respectfully yours,

(sgd)CESAR G. DEMAYO, PhD
